i agree, I dont know why we call it soccer, it should be futbol, football, and fusball, i think is the other name, nope they wont change the name because of american football, which is fun to watch but, not like soccer.

Basically when the game was formed properly in the 19th century it was run by the football assosiation (FA) - Then William Web Ellis came along and was playing football for Rugby school in northern England, he picks up the ball mid game and runs with it, and starts the new game, Rugby Football.

So there were 2 big games around, 'Rugby Football' (ie a form of football that came from the town of Rugby) and Association football (the football run by the football assosiation).

Both were liked by the middle classes who ran the sports organising bodies in thier early days, as it was acceptable to call both football, some began to use the word 'Association' and broke it up into soccer.

Realy that never took off as people in England always tended to like Football above Rugby, but the Americans looked at Rugby and created the game of American football - Football(soccer) has never been that popular in America so they had no problems with calling it American Football. On the times that they do look at the Europeon football they refer to it as soccer. The Same sort of thing goes for Aussie rules.

I like it when they called it kicking the Danes skull. You had the city and two open gates. One team would try to kick the skull out the opposite gate. No rules or fouls to be called . Just kick the skull.

well both my pics were right today as usual, Germany wins in PK over Argentina, and Italy wins against Ukraine 3-0, well i wonder if my pics for tommorrow will come true, lets watch tommorrow and find out, but they will come true.

i have lost a pick for the first time today with the France and Spain game, I must admit that France looked great, looked as if they really wanted this win. Well my pics for the quarterfinals are:
Germany 2-Argentina 1
Italy 2- Ukraine 0
England and portugal is a tough pick, this will be so close but, i have England 1- Portugal 0
Brazil 3- France 0

Didn't get the Germany score right though - but I seriously hope your pics are right for tommorow:tongue:

My predictions for the England/Portugal and the Brazil/France games.

England-2, Portugal-2 (PK, England, 5-4)

Brazil-3, France-1.

no i care less about the score and if i got it right, the point is that i picked Germany to win and i was right so...

...but Germany just beat Argentina.

Nice pair of results today. Hope the Deutsche can keep it up. Shame it came down to pennos though, I know they're necessary but it just makes the past two hours feel so pointless and isn't really football.

Incidently, on the topic of Football vs Soccer, we kinda have that problem here in Ireland with Gaelic Football. We call soccer football about as much as the Brits do, but we also call the GAA game football. You kinda have to rely on context to figure out what's being discussed....

Now that I think about it, the other big GAA game has two completely different names for men's and women's: hurling and camogie. What a complete waste of names, we should steal one for GAA football.

I'm telling you right now. France is going to beat brazil, then win it all. 2 Goals from henry against brazil in a 3-1 france win.

Brazil isn't playing brazilian soccer, and france is really starting to pick it up. France ftw

Germany won in penalties after 1-1 tied germany wins 4-2. Italy wins 3-0 in regular time. Tommorow, we have my country, Portugal, pited against the mighty England. My hopes lean strongly towards Portugal, but it will be anyones game.
Brazil and France. Well, this was unexpected after seeing a horrible french team, but they now have the chance to advance to the semi-finals. While I'm not fond of either team, I'm hoping for the French to celebrate a victory.

oh believe me. france will win

I also hope the French win. Nothing personal against the Brazilians, I'm just an underdog addict. I remember reading a newspaper article back at the beginning of the Cup saying how Ireland had seemingly adopted Brazil for the tournament; pathetic. Why automatically support the team that's most likely to win? Where's the fun in saying you were on the bandwagon?

I was extremely disillusioned by France after their shambolic performance in Korea as reigning Champs but they've turned themselves around remarkably.

Scolari>Sven - its simply the truth, any sucees this team gets is from his 'assistants' McLaraen and Lee. They're the ones realy running the show.

And Portugal will win on Penalties, I just know it, thats why I can throw away a Blasty ex like that - hell i'll send Sven an entire Queendom deck if England win the world cup.
