Worlds 2008 Location Is..........

Seems like if Worlds was in the UK this year, you'd be the one crying a river, huh? Don't get on the guy for wanting the locations to be at DIFFERENT locations. It's not like Worlds has been in the same nation as many international players 3 out of the 4 years it's been going on.

:/

I hope Worlds is somewhere other than the US in 2009.

No, I would enjoy the fact that worlds would be in the UK. That would be amazing.

I'm just tired of people who have events so close to them complain about everything. No matter where Nationals/Worlds are, at least someone will complain, no one is ever going to be happy with one decision.

I noticed he edited his original post as well.

I noticed he edited his original post as well.

That was spelling and removed a "How unoriginal", but it could still be applied anyway.
I'm only reflecting my opinion and a few others' feelings about it. There's no need to single me out you know. >_>

I'm gonna have to start pushing my family for a vacation down there this time next year....

Do we have an exact date and location yet? I'd kinda like to get my travel arrangements together before going...

I hope they have a grinder. And if they do I bet they will have close to 600 people in it. We are so depressed about not being in Hawaii right now. Been staying away from Pokemon lately . But this news made our day brighter. Guess we wil now be heading for a prerelease soon. Good Luck to all those that made it to Worlds 2007. Look forward to seeing the results.

Our thoughts exactly. My boys really wanted to go to Worlds but Hawaii was just too expensive and given their ages really not a lot to do there except Pokemon and beaches. But Orlando - awesome. Already put it in the budget to save for that every month of this next year. We will see everyone there!

And best of luck to everyone who is in Hawaii! Have a blast and make Ohio proud again!

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Ummmm, speaking of hurricanes I just saw that the National Hurricane Center has upgraded the Pacific storm Flossie to a hurricane. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20188481/ I know that everyone will be safe at Worlds I just hope it only rains when everyone is inside at the tournament anyhow!

Ben & ShadowCard: As I explained in an older thread...the inflatibles did cost 15K, but that cost was picked up by other wings of Nintendo, NOT PUI. There wasnt any OP money spent on the inflatibles themselves. They were there via promotion of the game.

Is this Orlando, Florida or Orlando Bloom? Just to make sure.

Neither, we're talking about the 1992 hit film "Orlando", in which young nobleman Orlando is commanded by Queen Elizabeth I to stay forever young. Miraculously, he does just that. The film follows him as he moves through several centuries of British history, experiencing a variety of lives and relationships along the way, and even changing sex.

I'll be happy to lend you the DVD Dom.

I don't under stand why one earth pop is having worlds in the farthest corners of the country?? If they wanted somewhere on the east coast, why not pick a mor central location, like Baltimore or D.C.? Both cities have plenty to do and see, not to mention the fact that they are both close to Anapolis, where their is even more to do and see. It just dosn't make sence to have worlds in such a hard to get to location.

And for all those who think that worlds should be outside the US, BAD idea. The US has the largest player base out of any country, and dosn't get enough invites as it is. Come on, most of our states are as big or bigger than countries in Europe, and have more players. It just wouldn't make any sence to move it to Europe, or some other forien country, when the US has more players. :nonono:

Thanks for the clarification.

The DC area isn't exactly "tropical." You don't come to it when you want to go to the beach, you come to it when you want to see great museums.

I agree that the US gets too few invites. But what has that got to do with a non-US location? As far as I can see, the two are not correlated. (Expenses shouldn't be an issue - it is called Worlds after all.)

If it remains in the US, shouldn't they at least change the name? Maybe something like 'The competition where we invite people from all over the world to the US'.

Fine with me, havn't been to Florida in years. It'd be easier to make it to the grinder too...maybe there will be a few more trips since it will be cheaper?

POP has a budget.

If they recieve X dollars for the year, they can't just dump 90% of it into Worlds because someone wants it in another country.

Okay?

No... it's not OK. And I don't think a non-US location would stretch the budget so much that it can't be done. Especially with Pokémon TCG raking in the money according to ICv2. Now if M:TG is able to hold lavish events all around the world, why can't a game with more money exactly?

Oh, and just to make it clear, unless Worlds is ever in London, I have no intention of attending one. I'm a collector, not a player. In my eyes, that makes me more impartial than most on this thread.

1. POP is not in charge of their own budget.

2. POP's budget is not necissarily proportional to the amount of cards they sell.

3. Sending Worlds over-seas would cost MUCH more than holding it in the continental US.

...OK, but none of those things necessarily precludes the possibility of holding it outside the US. Given past form, it appears unlikely. Though I will definitely keep banging on the (proverbial) drum until it's done, or someone gives me a good reason why it can't be done.

What's the point of calling it Worlds if it's only ever held in the US. Even Japan would be a nice change. And it doesn't even have to be in an erea with a high OP. It's supposed to be a celebration of the worlds best players for the ultimate prize. It's supposed to be glamarous. It's suppossed to be decadent.

Orlando is a good location, sure - don't quite understand the posts that say it isn't. But there are even better places. You know, outside the US...

2. POP's budget is not necissarily proportional to the amount of cards they sell.
Liesik said all of POP's budget comes from TCG sales profits. Therefore, TCG sales go up, POP's budget goes up. Unless PUSA is hoarding the profits...

As for Worlds being held outside of the US, and thus turning it away from being US Nats2 with foreign players able to win lots of stuff, it would be a chance for a lot of us who would normally not leave the country to visit a different country. Hopefully passport hassles won't be as big of a problem next year.

No, it makes you irrelevant.

Worlds is about playing.

Anything outside the US will be a failure.

Ok guys, lighten up a bit, thanks. It's time to talk about where the location is, not about where we wish it would be, or why it should be in a particular other area - or not. Let's get this thread a little more focused instead of a little more contentious.

Worlds is about playing.
@ dogma and The_Gorn: I think Worlds offers a lot to a collector. A lot of people gathered in one place, most likely carrying excess cards to get out of their hands before the rotation, as well as foreign players bringing with them cards (I still want a Timmy au Dressage!). Japanese cards have become popular to play with, so trading with Japanese players can be good for a collector to trade for other English cards.
This coming from someone who hasn't been to Worlds before though. Tell me if I'm wrong in my opinion.

Anything outside the US will be a failure.
Again, I disagree. While the US can bring a lot of people to its tournaments and moving the location abroad would cut US participation, the countries around the abroad location would fill in the void left by the American's absence.

For Worlds in Florida again, I think it says a lot about where the bulk of the player base is - Florida, California, Hawaii (closest to Japan). Is it just as easy for people in Texas (around midpoint of the state) to go to the Florida location as it is to go to Southern California locations?
