Worlds Championship- why should it be in the US?

M45, before I forget ... WotC has paid trips for ESTS New York (twice), WSTS San Diego ane Worlds Seattle ... and they've even paid many trips

Back to the topic ...

There is no need to increase the number of invites for European players. Why ? There are not many players who can pay 4 to 5000 USD for 3 days (2 people) in the USA, even if it's for Worlds (trip 2500 USD - room + food + various 1500 USD). Please compare that with the budget for US players and think at how many US people didn't come to SD this year for financial reasons

What we need in Europe, if you want to see more European players in Anaheim next year, is more trips + hotel.
Trips paid by the Local distributors ? Sure, but why wouldn't PUI pay for European trips too ?
I don't have all the info about the commercial and financial circuits between PUI and Europe, but I've always said that running main events and giving great prizes is a big marketing and promotional tool.
Hasn't PUI also interest in seeing the game grow and sales increased in Europe ?
I'm sure they have !
When I've seen the organization of Worlds this year (which was absolutely fantastic), I've thought that, with only 10 % of that budget, PUI could have sent some more European players to Worlds.

Rainbowgym, I don't think it's easy, and useful, to compare the amount of players between USA and Europe. There are too many ways of interpreting these figures, and in addition to that, we all know that a lot of players are not registered in the ranked players on PUI's website.
But I don't understand why people, in and outside Europe, don't simply compare Europe and the USA as 'Pokemon regions'.
USA have different States, Europe has different countries, as easy as that. Who cares if there are less people in Wyoming than in California, in Luxemburg than in UK ? US population is about 296000000, European 'Pokemon countries' population (Germany, UK, Italy, France, Belgium, Sweden, Holland, France, Denmark, Czech Rep, Finland) is about 320000000.

Nationals next year ? Run Nationals for resident players only and you leave the players only one single main even to play in Europe.
We only had 1 Stadium in 2005 with a limited amount of players (and 14 hours driving from my home), and nothing is sure about 2006.
I've talked with a US player in SD who told me he had, at maximum 100 miles from his home, 5 or 6 tournaments that offered trips to Worlds !!!
Let's be serious ... not only we have far less trips, but we wouldn't even have main events ?

It's all about budget ? ok, let's go ...
How much does it cost to me for my daughter who plays Pokemon (yearly) .
Boosters : 2 boxes of the 4 annual sets at 125 Euro (160 USD) each = USD 1280
Single cards (as the trade market is very poor in our country) : USD 250
Trip to the National : could be close to our home
Travel to Worlds with my daughter : USD 5000 (remember, 3 days, not holidays !)

For a couple of local events, a couple of Cities which are exactly the same as the local events, a National and a World (not sure she'll may play, but she'll be there) ... it costs me ... 6530 USD
and I don't talk about the prereleases (30 USD each for 7 boosters) or transport to the local events.

What can you do, in the USA, if you put 6500 USD in the game each year ?
How many parents can afford such an expense for a game played by their kids ?

Let's run Worlds in Europe and give invites to the European players ... we have lovely touristic places too and it would be better for my budget

Hmmm all the talk of no more trips = no more invites I'm gonna disagree slightly, I'm sure a lot more people from Europe than one might think would pay to go to Worlds to play with an invite and no trip. I missed out on an invite by quite possibly the smallest margin imaginable, hmm I guess that happens with a top 4 cut @ Nats, 5th place in swiss = no Worlds yeah thanks very much.

Its all very well saying why give out invites that aren't gonna be used, but that isn't always true and not being given a choice is hardly fair, I don't mind spending a few £1000 or whatever it is to play in the biggest Pokémon TCG event. So my only choice is to become a better player I guess and make the top 4 next year or hope for a bigger cut hmmmm maybe I'm just not good enough for Worlds.

The 'whoever' you refer to would be me. After attending the Canadian Nationals this year (nice job Marvin and crew) I have to say I agree with you. In 2006 the National Championships of Canada, Mexico and probably the US will require legal residency. The same will not be true of Gyms.
why is that? All the canadians get trips regardless anyway....and i wanna defend my title =(

true it would be nice if they were in other more exotic places but dont you think pokemon gives out the best prizes as it is seriously if they maede the trips in other places lless people could go and the prices would be less you have to think on a larger scale than just you

But don't ya think it would be nice to see a Canadian win the Canadian Nationals?

You make a good point...but those aren't as huge events as the World Qualifiers. Wouldn't you be furious if a Canadian decided to come down to the US Nationals and win it? The first Canadian Nationals...won by Americans...that makes us Canadians feel great doesn't it?

If a canadian won US nats and they deserved it, by all means should they win it...Not only that, but it's closer to go to Canadian Nats (if in same place) then US nats, so why shouldn't i be allowed to go?

do you canadians want to win a national and "think your good" or do you want to win a nationals with other great players from the US and know you beaten the best?

Maybe it's just me, but as a Canadian, I'd like to see a Canadian win the Canadian Nationals. SomethingElse is right. If the person won it, he deserves it. You did great at Nationals. I wouldn't want to win Nationals for the bragging rights, basically I want the scholarship and the invite. The scholarship is very important to me for my future (don't believe me if you don't want). I guess everyone's point of view is different.

To me I find it kind of sad how easy it is for an international player to come and play at the Canadian Nats. I'm sure some people would agree with me when i say it would be great to see a fellow Canadian with the Canadian Nationals. Though there is one thing that completely flaws my opinion. If an international player decides to play, then we must prove that us Canadians are good players by winning it. Last year that didn't happen. I did rush to conclusions to not allow international players play at Canadian Nationals, but that was being cheap only to let more Canadians play at Worlds. I may sound like a ******* saying this, but last year we weren't good enough. Now tying this with Worlds...

The reason I don't want international players to play at other nationals is becuase I want to see more Canadians at Worlds. This definately applies to otehr countries. You want your country to win, but how is this possible if international players win your World Qualifiers. That means a less chance for your country to win Worlds. I made this arguement because I want Worlds to be even; not filled with the many US players. This would be hard because of all the Gym Challenges in the US, and how little other countries (including Canada) have. What are the odds though that Worlds will ever have an equal chance for all countries to win?

Agree/Disagree. This is just my opinion.

BTW, I was using Canadian Nationals/events since I am a Canadian resident. This could apply to other countries aswell.

Let's invite Yamato and friends over to our Nationals. I wonder how fast people would change their mind about international visiting. I am against people from another nation coming into one nation and winning an event as big as nationals. It isn't just a tournament, it is a National tournament and should only be open for those in that nation.

I agree with you for sure, I mean, I always want to have someone from the US to win our nats. But I mean, someone from out of US flies in for origins, and to meet all the pokemon players. Nationals is that weekend too, so he just has to sit out and watch 300+ people play, while he can play like a 20 person side event for some packs? That's no fair at all.

Here's why it should be in the US:

Anaheim in '06 = Disney Land = Reason for families to let their kids grinder in.

GG.

Aren't there various Disney parks scattered accross the world? I know of one in France and Tokoyo, where else are they located? CAn't use that argument, SW...

Disney has five Magic Kingdoms in the world including Hong Kong, six including the Shanghai resort.

Currently:
Disneyland Resort (Disneyland and California Adventure parks)
Walt Disney World (Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney-MGM-Studios, Animal Kingdom, and etc)
Toyko Disneyland Resort (Toyko Disneyland and Toyko Disney Seas)
Disneyland Paris Resort (Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney Studios parks)

Opening in September:
Hong Kong Disneyland Resort

2012:
Disneyland Shanghai Resort
