A simple proposal for regionals....

For the people that say that certain decks were just as dominant as GG/Mag were, let's look at the "What won your state" from years ago (15+):

2004:
BEX/Blazi variants: 25
Gardevoir variants: 12
Swampert variants: 7
Kingdra variants: 3
Team Aqua Deck's: 3
Tops ex variants: 1

Even though BEX/Garde did do better than all the other decks, Swampert did almost as good as Garde, and Kingdra, and TA decks even were able to win their handfull of states too.

2005:(updated fully by me)
Rocklock: 12
Blaziken: 6 (one w/ slaking)
Dragonite: 6
Non-ttar amphy variants: 4
Salamence: 3 (one w/ slaking)
Sceptile: 2
Metagross: 1
Vileplume: 1
Zapdos: 1
Voodoo: 1
Deoxys/Regis: 1

Rocklock won a lot, but again, there were a lot of different decks winning, even if it was just a single state. Blaziken and Dragonite pulled off a handfull of states too, with Amphy, Salamence and Sceptile winning multiple states too. A lot of variety.

2006:
15 LBS
5 Medicham
3 Machamp
2 Scizogross
2 Queendom
2 Draggytrode
2 Ludicargo
2 Rock-Lock
Camerupt ex
Meganium-ex
Politoed
Spider Trap
Metanite
Dark Tyranitar
Gengar
Burning Liability
Metatrode
Lunarock
Flygon-ex
Vilex
ZRE
Manectric-ex/Eeveelutions
Pow!-Block

Look how many different decks won a state championship. According to Flaming_Spinach, 23 different decks won a State Championship. Sure, LBS won a lot of States, but there were so many other decks that won, it just shows how LBS was not as dominant as people are making it out to be.

2007:
6 Metanite
5 MSNBC
4 Raieggs
4 Flygon d ex
4 Flygon d
3 Banette
3 Destiny
2 Shiftry
2 Absolutions
2 Flariados
1 Meganium d/ex
1 Arcanine ex

Again, a lot of different decks. Not as many as the year before, but a lot. Also, no one deck dominated like they had in the past. It was a close spread among a lot of different decks.

So I ask you...was LBS, Blaze, Garde, Rocklock, etc as dominant as GG/Mag? I don't think they were.

Prime, I wish you would have included the GG/Mag stats from Cities here, but we can wait for states to conclude.

I think the last situation close to the current meta was BEX/GG. It has been more diverse since then.

And yah, we had big threads on banning BEX then. That got as far as banning Gardy/Mags will get, IMO.

This thread seems to me less about that Quixotic quest to ban the biggest cards in the format, than, on the one hand, urging PUI to keep up better with PCL and on the other hand (in the lead post), about generally condemning players for playing best deck in format (BDIF ) and specifically praising individuals for being able to not play BDIF and still win.

I have a question about those two decks. For how long did they rule the format? Right now we've had the same two decks in place since City Championships. We will probably see the same thing come Regionals (whatever Jimmy's deck is, there's always a counter for the counter). All in all, this entire season has left a bad taste in my mouth with the exception of all the different Blissey decks (BlissCat has been the only deck I've enjoyed playing competitively this year). Were those two decks dominant for an entire season? If so, how did players react to their dominance? What event led to the end of those decks? And my gosh, couldn't people just counter those decks (as many have suggested at the current situation), especially with the 2x weakness?!

If I recall correctly:

Riptide was untouchable until Neon (when Trash Exchange rotated out).

Blaze Ex/Garde Ex - from Dragon til the advent of Rock Lock.

And even after Neon, Riptide still ruled the format for about another year, with Parasect as its backup. The difference was that it had a deck that could compete with it: Big Fire (ironic, no?).

Blaze and Gardy ruled the US formats pretty much from the time that RS came out until Japan swept Worlds with Magma. Even after that, it was still quite common to see half the format playing Blaze/Gardy varients until (and even after) the advent of RockLock. I took 2nd at Manitowoc GC05 using Gardy, getting some SPECTACULAR matchups all the way to the finals, losing only once to a RockLock build. Everything else was either Binder drops or Psy-weak decks. That was a fun tourney...

Althought the current format is by no doubt pretty boring, i really thing some people are overreacting. There are plenty of Decks that can keep with the standart Gardilate / Magmortar IMO. Just grab them by their weaknesses. There are more possibilitys in deck building then:

4 starter, i mean pachirisu, cause there aren't other ones existing
Some overpowered mainhitter line
2 Suppor.. i mean claydol
1 or 2 simple techs

Those kind of decks won't beat GG/Mortar
There are more Sets in the format than Dp1-Dp4. !!!

Gardevoir / Gallade and Magmortar are kinda overpowered and kill lots of other decks, but there are other possibilitys than the standart GG and Magmortar.

I really think it's kind of disturbing how uncreativ some people are, seriosly o_o
Most of you where around last year and remember how decks looked back then, right ?

Haha, I was that one Kabutops ex deck from '04. Good times...

Blaziken was the absolute most dominant deck of the Nintendo era - "the best there is, the best there was, and the best there ever will be." Nothing else has dominated for an entire season like it did (from Cities to Worlds), and nothing ever will. At that time, people complained about Blaziken ex needing to be banned, but it never happened... and the banning of Gardy/Gallade/Magmortar won't happen, either.

Hello all,

As you all know I am about to go to Michigan states and try to run the new deck I call THE ANSWER. It is a simple deck that I feel could really disturb the metagame. I wanted to get this up PRIOR to getting my butt handed to me by the very decks I built this deck to beat. LOL!

So here goes....

PUI please ban Magmortar and Gardevoir for regionals.

I know I am gonna get flamed by all the people who cant take the time to study all the other GREAT cards this format has to offer and put them to good use. (instead of binder trash). I will also get praise from all the people who love this game for what i was meant to be. FUN AND CHALLENGING for the brain.

Without those 2 particular cards, this format would be so much fun. Games would not be determined by the first one to gardy or mortar. I would get to play against more than 2 decks at any event I TRAVEL MILES TO!!!

Now, Before you all think that I am just trying to make it easier for myself to win at regionals. I just want to let you all know in ADVANCE, I will not be attending one this year. The way the tournaments are set up this year has destroyed my hope of top cutting another one. However, No fear!!! I will be back to play for nationals.

So, I ask again... What would it hurt to temporarily BAN these 2 cards? I can only see an upside.

Jimmy

banning gardy would make the metagame a gatrfest. banning cards just makes others take their place.
I have to agree with this quote, it makes perfect and complete sense.

GG and Mag will continue to rule up to, and perhaps through, Worlds.

And then, in the DP-on format of next year, they will likely continue to run the show.

Magmortar will probably decline thanks to Glaceon anytime soon.

Ill be there to provide you stats of what deck that dominated this year.... but I am sure the winner is clear.... Gardelade variants =D

Honestly, I don't see Glaceon hurting Magmortar that much. Even so, GG still isn't hampered by the next set.

Every format is the same. Somebody comes up with a great idea and then everybody copies it.

Heard at Nationals last year - "I'm so proud of myself. I traded for all the cards I need to build Ambush."

Quite an accomplishment.

So.... the main problem that is with the format is the large abusement of DRE, Scramble, Celio....thats why it makes alot of decks playable :S

A simple word change may open up the environment:

Change Scrambel & DRE to not be attachable to a Level X.

SHould slow them down enough to make others viable.

but would it really?

Mag HAS to discard basics, and 2 psy are easy to put on gardy.

I think the real problem with this format is that Gardevoir and Magmortar are two RADICALLY different decks. The former focuses on straight damage with Power manipulation and just good attacks, with Bring Down as the closer, while Magmortar is much stingier with its time and likes to spread damage and built up with Energy acceleration.

This combination of two different ways a deck runs is what it makes it so hard to counter. There are plenty of decks that can beat Gardevoir and plenty that can beat Magmortar, but almost none will beat both. If you CAN find one that beats both, it's usually not more than like 60-40 or so, and you also lose to all the other random decks like Banette and Blissey.

This format is stale and boring, but we'll have to get through it. Sometimes the most obviously broken cards are cards that are played but no one really ever mentions. Look for combos people, they're out there (like the truth).

Did this happen back then? Nope. Back then, Blaze's everywhere was way too ridiculous and frustrating.
Close thread.

Awesome link. And if you scan through the members posting that Blaze ex was awful for the Meta (over those 9+ pages), well, we have some notable authorities taking that position.

I suggest that thread is one thing that shows we've been here before. Then, the Japanese gave the game a neck-snapping lesson in the fact that a powerful counter could be found.

Close thread? It's a notable discussion, let it run its course. The only posts that get deleted are those that get personal. Report those.

So, we're in a power-deck meta, instead of a finesse-deck meta. Whine, roll with it or find the counter, because POP isn't going to ban the cards... no inside info, just common sense judgment.
