Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Carrington388's CaC Contest--"The Apprentice" Style

OK, Team Torchic, it's time to head into the boardroom.

[ZoraJolteon, LorakLucan, Ancient Pokemon Trainer, and dragonspy900 file into boardroom]

Team Techno Fluff, please do not look in the boardroom. If you do, one of you could end up fired whenever you go the boardroom.

[ZoraJolteon, LorakLucan, and dragonspy900 walk into lobby]

Ancient Pokemon Trainer was fired and has been eliminated from the contest. Here's the set of round 11 links for all to view:

Torchic Contest-Winner Counters
Techno Fluff Contest-Winner Counters
The Eleventh Boardroom

And here's how the teams stand now:

Team Torchic:
Captain: ZoraJolteon
2. LorakLucan
3. dragonspy900

Team Techno Fluff:
Captain: Sunflorazumarill
2. DragonSol
3. Scribble
4. lunatone_solrock

Here is the round 12 assignment:

"The man" has drafted a new business plan. Looking at some CaC mechanics created at the Pokégym, he has decided to start a set called EX: Expanded using these mechanics.

To promote the new set, we've discovered a stockpile of 15,000 Topeka promo sets, from way back in round 5, full of Pokémon-ex still in a warehouse. The plan: Distribute these 15,000 promo sets with some new cards. Almost all of the new cards will have CaC-created mechanics, because three multi-Prize mechanics will be allowed into the new limited-issue version of the promo set.

These three are:

Pokémon-ex. The tried-and-true Nintendo multi-Prize mechanic. Up to 4 per name in a deck. 2 Prizes for a knockout.
Pokémon-SP. Burninating_Torchic's original stretch-the-limits card. Up to 1 per name in a deck. 3 Prizes for a knockout.
Pokémon-DS. Burninating_Torchic stretched the limits even further. Up to 1 Pokémon-DS per deck. 4 Prizes for a knockout.

"The man" looked at Pokémon-XA (2 KOs when played, 1 XA per deck, 5 Prizes per KO) and Pokémon-XD (1 XD per deck, 6 Prizes per KO and match loss in match play) and judged them to be too broken to be allowed in this limited issue.

Here's the round 12 specifications and rubric:

Descriptors: Permitted
Owners: Permitted, Must Come Before Descriptor
Dual-Types: Permitted
Ultima Types: No
Multi-Prize Mechanics: Required, Pokémon-ex, Pokémon-SP, and Pokémon-DS Allowed
Chaos Emerald Mechanics: Permitted
Legal Stages: Basic, Stage 1 and Stage 2
Fourth Generation: No

Name--3 points. Make sure everything's spelled right, including the multi-Prize mechanic.
Picture--3 points. Try to make it descriptive.
Type(s)--5 points. Single-types and dual-types are acceptable. Make sure they fit.
HP--5 points. Make sure it fits the card well. Too much or too little and I dock you.
Weakness/Resistance--5 points. Make sure all Weakness and Resistances the mechanic allows fit. The more allowable, the more lenient I'll be on nonsensical ones.
Retreat Cost--5 points. Again, make it fit the card.
Pokemon Power/Attacks--30 points. No more than three total per card, and the card must have at least 1 attack. You can have 1 attack only, 2 attacks only, 1 attack and 1 power, 2 attacks and 1 power, etc. on your card. If you do 1, it's worth 30; if you do 2, they're worth 15 each; and if you do 3, they're worth 10 each.
Rarity--3 points. Not much choice here, but make sure you choose it right.
Explanations--8 points. May sound harsh, but it helps to explain not only how the card works, but why mechanics are what they are.
Strategy--8 points. How can you combine your card with other cards effectively?
Penalties--The categories are starting to close, but there are still some, so try to steer clear of those. Ultima types take the challenge out of Pokémon-DS, and since the former's banned, that's still a penalty. There are still others out there.
Round 3 Possible Total--75 points.
If both teams have average scores of 45 points or lower, both teams go to the boardroom.

Anyway, it's time to make some cards. Team Torchic is trying to reverse a losing streak. Can they do it now that the doors are opened wider? Or will Team Techno Fluff take advantage of the opened doors to win their fourth round in a row? May the best team win.

So, I can use Pokemon-!! to refer to the SP and DS, right? (Even though they also reference XA and XD, but I mean it like for example an attack that does damage to Pokemon-!!)

And you said ANY descriptors (Light, Dark, Uber, Peace...) so long as it doesn't effect the prize mechanics, right?

That's a negative. Pokémon-!! assumes SP, DS, XA, and XD, the latter two of which aren't allowed in this round.

That's a positive. Just remember spelling counts.

OK, here are each team's average scores for this round:

Team Torchic: 70 Points (Lowest Card Score 67, Highest Card Score 75)
Team Techno Fluff: 72 Points (Lowest Card Score 70, Highest Card Score 73)

I'm a bit disappointed in both teams. I open the doors to more options, and nobody went through! Nevertheless, Team Techno Fluff was generally better, thus Team Techno Fluff is safe from the boardroom! Most of the cards on both teams were generally well thought-out, and even the one (not mentioning team) that had some trouble in the thought process managed to do other elements well. It all came down to the better quality, where Techno Fluff squeezed out the win and improved to 10-2 with their fourth win in a row!

Well, Team Torchic, I've got some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you made an awesome turnaround with the biggest comeback this contest has ever had. I mean, this round was a lot like earlier ones where the decisions were very close. The bad news is that you came up just short. I'll open the boardroom at around 6:00 PM Central, that's when you'll have a date with the boardroom. One player will be eliminated from this contest. This decision will be just as hard on me as it is on you, so don't be surprised if you're the one being cut loose. You have until around 6:00 PM tonight to think about it. I'll see you there.

for those that don't know, his door metaphor referred to the fact that neither team decided to make anything other then Pokemon ex. I'm ashamed of all of you. Just remember, WWBTD? I'll let you figure that one out on your own.

OK, Team Torchic, it's time to head into the boardroom.

Team Techno Fluff, please do not look in the boardroom. If you do, one of you could end up fired whenever you go the boardroom.

Oh good golly! What a surprise! I merely get penalised for giving Tropius one of it's 2 different perfectly legitimate weaknesses, and a type mechanic that's extremely marginally different to one that appears on multiple official cards, while Team Techno Fluff is subjected to this harsh grading!

Picture: The picture is handrawn with further digital enhancements (sorry I took it from your card, Scribble. I dunno how to word it). A Xatu is standing facing you on a stone altar. The stone altar have some faded and weather-worn carvings on it depicting Unowns. The Xatu is looking up to the sky. The background is dark blue. There are big multi-coloured (yellow, dark green, red and light blue) distorted eyes floating in the background. The largest one is a yellow one just behind Xatu. Others are way smaller than that one. The eyes gave off light and it glowed a little, illuminating the background a little like gigantic fireflies. Among those eyes are sparkly glowing dusts drifting in the night air. The picture is very simple, like many Pokémon-ex's pictures. (Mitsushiro Arita style)

Picture--3/3. "I took it from your card, Scribble. I dunno how to word it"? Nice picture anyway.

Pic: The picture is set in a desert at night. The moon is out, as well as many stars in the sky, which takes up about the top 1/4 of the picture. In the desert is a cactus to the far left side. Sandslash is standing in the center of the picture, with its body facing you. Its snout, however, is facing up to the sky, as if sniffing for something. You can see a hole in the ground, near its claws, which are hanging at its sides. It seems to have been foraging for food.

Picture--3/3. That fits, doesn't it?

Picture:
The following pic is hand drawn, with further digital refinements (so it is not a fully digital picture like Typhlosion ex or Rayquaza ex, more like Ninetales ex)

There is a egg-shaped laboratory, with smooth, curving gray walls, with a huge egg-shaped tank suspended from the ceiling on cables. The tank is half-filled with a dark sludge. Sitting in the tank is a Swalot glowing with greenish energy. Floating in the tank is a light pink Chaos Emerald. Sitting to the right at the other end of the picture is a familiar bulky shape, with a huge mustache, staring upwards thoughtfully at tank. The picture is to the back and right side (as seen by us) of the eggish doctor.

Picture--3/3. Great.

Yes, because Pokemon ex always have highly detailed backgrounds, don't they.

Poké-Body (Quick Dive)
At any time between turns, if Xatu ex is your Active Pokémon, you may draw a card. This Poké-Body stops working if your other Active Pokémon is a Xatu ex.

Quick Dive--10/10. A very good mechanic.

PokéPOWER: Hyper Healing Wind Once during your turn (before you attack), you may remove 2 damage counters from each of your Pokémon. You can’t use more than 1 Hyper Healing Wind Poké-Power each turn. This power can’t be used if Aeris’s Xatu ex is affected by a Special Condition.

Hyper Healing Wind--10/10. Nice way to prevent abuse.

[LorakLucan and dragonspy900 walk into lobby]

You probably see the reason ZoraJolteon didn't come out. All ZoraJolteon had to do was wait and he probably would not have been fired. Instead, that post above this one is the reason ZoraJolteon was fired and has been eliminated from this contest. Here's the list of round 12 links ZoraJolteon couldn't wait to see:

Torchic's Multi-Prize Cards
Techno Fluff's Multi-Prize Cards
The 12th Boardroom

And here's how the teams stand now:

Team Torchic:
1. LorakLucan
2. dragonspy900

Team Techno Fluff:
Captain: Sunflorazumarill
2. DragonSol
3. Scribble
4. lunatone_solrock

Well, we've been handed the round 13 assignment, but it looks as if the teams aren't ready. Once again, Team Torchic is without a captain! Not only that, but Team Techno Fluff has 4 players while Team Torchic has only 2.

Since Team Torchic has only 2 players, voting for a new captain is impossible since the votes cancel out. Therefore, we'll go straight to the final tiebreaker of cardmaking to decide which of the 2 remaining members of Team Torchic will become the new captain.

Team Techno Fluff, one of you four will be going over to the under-new-management Team Torchic for round 13 and beyond. You can talk between yourselves via PM or other method of communication (not in this thread), but the eventual decision must come from the captain. Sunflorazumarill, once you've decided which Team Techno Fluff member you wish to send to Team Torchic, PM me your choice and that member will become part of Team Torchic. Do not post the decision here. I'll reveal the choice either when I recieve Sunflorazumarill's decision or once Team Torchic has a new captain, whichever is later.
Awaiting Decision From: Sunflorazumarill

Anyway, here's the category for the tiebreaker. It's non-evolving Basics. You'll be making a non-evolving Basic to become part of EX: Expanded. A non-evolving Basic is a Basic Pokémon that has no evolved form. The Team Torchic member who makes the better one will become the new captain. LorakLucan, dragonspy900, you'll post your cards in this thread. Here's the specifications and rubric for the tiebreaker:

Descriptors: Permitted
Owners: Permitted, Must Come Before Descriptor
Dual-Types: Permitted
Ultima Types: No
Multi-Prize Mechanics: Permitted, Pokémon-ex, Pokémon-SP, and Pokémon-DS Allowed
Chaos Emerald Mechanics: Permitted
Legal Stages: Basic only
Fourth Generation: No

Name--3 points. Make sure everything's spelled right, including an ownername if one is used and the multi-Prize mechanic if one is used.
Whichever of LorakLucan or dragonspy900 that gets the higher score becomes the new Team Torchic captain.

LorakLucan, dragonspy900, let's make some cards. Remember, the better card becomes the captain.

Magmar (R) HP:70
Basic Pokémon

Poké-Body:Flame Aura
If Magmar is your Active Pokémon, for each (R) energy attached to Magmar, reduce your Opponent's attack by 10 damage to Magmar.

Magma Flow (R) (C)
This attack does 20 damage to each of your Opponent's Pokémon. (Don't apply Weakness and Resitance for Benched Pokémon).

Volcanic Explosion (R) (R) (R):80
Discard all (R) energy attached to Magmar or this attack does nonthing.

Weakness (W)
Resitance
Retreat Cost (C) (C)
Rarity:Rare

Picture: You see a 2-D Magmar standing on a cliff ledge from the top left of the picture. Magmar is looking in front of him. To the middle to the bottom right you see volcanoes. All of the volcanoes are spewing magma and smoke from the top of the volcano. Some lava and rocks are going down to the left side of the volcano.

Explanations Magmar is a (R) type and has 70 HP. Magmar is a Basic Pokémon. Magmar's Poké-Body, "Flame Aura" does for each (R) energy attached to Magmar, reduce your Opponent's attacks by 10 to magmar. Magma Flow costs (R) (C) and does 20 damage to each of your Opponent's Pokémon. Volcanic Explsion costs (R) (R) (R) and does 80 damage. You must discard all (R) energy attached to Magmar to do the attack. Weakness is (W), there is no Resitance and Retreat Cost is (C) (C).

Strat:First you can use Volcanic Explosion to do 80 damage then you discard all energy attached to Magmar. Next turn use Energy Recycle System to get 3 (R) energy and put them in your deck. Then you retreat for a Parasect then you use Energy poweder to get 2 of those (R) energys back and attach them to Magmar. Next turn retreat Parasect for Magmar, attach a (R) energy to Magmar than use Volcanic Explosion for another 80 damage and maybe for a KO. Another combo is use Parasect to Energy Poweder as much (R) energy on Magmar so it can reduce alot of damage from Flame Aura.

Sableye
Type: (P)
60 HP
Stage 1 Pokémon - Evolves from Duskull
Weakness:
Resistance: (P)
Retreat Cost: (C)(C)
Rarity: Holo

Picture: In a hazy cloud of evaporating carbon dioxide (the "smoke" from dry ice), the top half of a pumpkin can be above a hazy cloud of evaporating carbon dioxide (the "smoke" from dry ice). Sitting on the pumpkin is a Sableye, grinning maliciously. Its hands are at its side, and it would look almost sad, as if you could sympathize with pain it was going through… but the telltale smile is more than enough to tip you off that it has other plans…

Poké-Body: Spectral Umbers
Any damage done to Sableye by attacks from (C) Pokémon and (F) Pokémon is reduced by 30 (after applying Weakness and Resistance).

(P) – Search and Fade
Search your deck for up to 2 Basic Pokémon or Evolution cards, show them to your opponent and put them into your hand. Then, shuffle Sableye into your deck. (Discard all cards attached to Sableye.)

(P)(C)(C) - Reality Distortion
For each of your opponent's Pokémon, flip a coin. If heads, this attack does 10 damage for each (C) Energy in that Pokémon's Retreat Cost to that Pokémon. (Don't apply Weakness and Resistance for Benched Pokémon.) If you do more than 70 damage in this way, put 2 damage counters on Sableye.

Explanations:
Descriptors: Nope.
Type: Ghost (P). Now, before you go and say all the other printed Sableyes are (D) and this should be only that type, both are perfectly legal types for this card to have.
HP: Same old same old for the HP. I want to give this card 70 HP, but won't because of how extremely useful the attacks are...
Weakness: A Dark / Ghost Pokémon has no double Weaknesses… so here we are. Deoxys Sableye doesn't have one either...
Resistance: Neither Ghost resistance? Nope. I went for the Dark type's (P) Resistance, even though this card isn't Dark type in particular. Why? You'll see...
Retreat Cost: It's a ghost, but not really fast, I mean it's 29.3, lower percentile in the GB game. There are better things to do with this card than retreating though.
Spectral Umbers: So, I have it in a "Foresight" body, meaning if Bodies are off, so are these two Ghost Resistances. (Phrasing from exUF Miltank)
Search and Fade: Yee! Deck Searching! This card could replace Plusle in this respect. And it can find Evolution cards! The only thing is you have to wait until your next turn to Bench the Basics, but you aren't THAT impatient, right…? Oh, and the minor details that might make it less techable: it uses 1 (P) instead of 1 (C)... and that it gets shuffled into your deck, and you lose any cards attached to it... maybe not so minor details... so Psychic decks will easily be able to use this, but others... may need to be more creative. Figuring in the Resistances too… this becomes a very solid search card… albeit expensive (tis Holo, remember!)
Reality Distortion: This attack really isn't too broken if you go and think it out… I mean it's a 50% chance of doing anywhere from 10 to 40 to each Benched Pokémon (even less if you remember free retreaters, and I doubt we'll see many 5C in play). I'll say the average damage is about 15. So, if your opponent has 6 Pokémon in play, with the 50% chance… works out to about 45 damage, which seems about right for (P)(C)(C). If you still think it's broken, it takes 20 damage if you do a lot of damage...

Combos:
Roughly every conceivable deck that needs a good Searching Pokémon for set-upand has (P) Energy: Dusclop ex / Dark Dusclops ex anyone?.
Any deck that has evolution cards: Save yourself a few slots with a few attacks by this guy.
Any mass Bench damaging Pokémon (Dark Tyranitar, Feraligatr ex...): more damage to the Bench, can't argue with that.
Any cards that increase the Retreat Cost of the Defending Pokémon, many more usable in 2v2 Mode
Reversal and Pokémon with attacks like Plunder: In case you see any tools to reduce Retreat Costs.

Conclusion: A relatively techable card. Good offensively if you like to take risks, but perhaps it doesn't have enough HP to stick around for its second attack. It could be able to be sacrificed for Scramble or P!HE, but it might make a good wall in the right situations. Take the risk on it if you will.

Well, here's the results...

dragonspy900's Magmar
Name--3/3. Technically I shouldn't count this because of Magby, but then again Magmar IS a Basic...
Picture--3/3. Oh, and I don't suppose EX: Expanded theme decks and booster boxes should come with 3-D glasses? Then again, that is a good idea to pass on to Marketing...
Type(s)--5/5. What else?
HP--5/5. That seems to fit...
Weakness/Resistance--5/5. That fits.
Retreat Cost--5/5. As does this.
Flame Aura--4/10. I can understand the mechanic, but it's slightly broken (what if you moved a Boost moved from a Base Charizard that used its power?), and you need a major reword after the first comma. I'd recommend something along the lines of "any damage done to Magmar by a Defending Pokémon's attack is reduced by 10 for each {R} Energy attached to Magmar". You also lost for neglecting when the damage is reduced (before Weakness and Resistance, after Weakness but before Resistance, after Weakness and Resistance).
Magma Flow--9/10. It works, but personally, I'd not apply Weakness and Resistance to the Defending as well. I mean, assuming both are {R}-Weakness, you're talking about 40 to each Defending and 20 to each Benched. You lost a point for a miscapitalization ("opponent" should be lowercase).
Volcanic Explosion--8/10. You forgot the word "cards" after "Energy", which the should be capitalized.
Rarity--3/3. At least you managed to nail this.
Explanations--8/8. Good.
Strategy--8/8. Nice.
Penalties--0/0. Nope.
Card Total--66/75.

LorakLucan's Sableye
Name--3/3. Good.
Picture--3/3. Now, perhaps if that was at Pumpkin Hill...
Type(s)--5/5. The road less-travelled. Nice.
HP--5/5. Nice.
Weakness/Resistance--4/5. You're right in going for no Weaknesses, but since Sableye is Dark/Ghost, Sableye's just begging for double Resistance. {F}{P} would have done well, as would {F}{C} and {P}{C}.
Retreat Cost--5/5. A good balance.
Spectal Umbers--10/10. Then again, this might be a reason you didn't go for double Resistance. Could combo well with Resistance Gym if you're not facing other Psychics.
Search and Fade--10/10. Great.
Reality Distortion--9/10. I don't get the last sentence of the attack. 70 damage to one or 70 damage in total? And although the second sentence works as worded, I could also see it being reworded...
Rarity--3/3. That could work.
Explanations--8/8. You didn't need the type rant.
Strategy--8/8. Good.
Penalties--(-Half the score)/0. Scribble caught this one before the assignment was posted. Not only did you get the Stage wrong, but you also got an evolution line mix-up. Had Scribble not caught this, you would have remained the captain...
Card Total--36/75.

dragonspy900, you are the new Team Torchic captain. DragonSol, you have been chosen to return to Team Torchic. Here's how the teams stand now:

Team Torchic:
Captain: dragonspy900
2. LorakLucan
3. DragonSol

Team Techno Fluff:
Captain: Sunflorazumarill
2. Scribble
3. lunatone_solrock

It's getting late, so I'll wait until tomorrow afternoon to post the round 13 assignment. Everyone, get some rest, you're going to want energy to see what the round 13 assignment is.
