One could make the argument that the concept of a "Public School" is itself a socialistic idea.

That's why I like Pokemon. There are no socialists Pokemon!

Of course I've always had my doubts about Jigglypuff

Sorry to get off track ;)

Why of course it is. Ok, now time to say something thread related, so I'm not taking this off track. Umm... I don't have school until two weeks after worlds, maybe three weeks after!! Yay me!!!

My school starts August 19...

Anybody recognize that date?

LOL, no frappin WAY my parents will allow me to miss school for "some stupid bloody game"...

1) I can't believe there is a nation in this world where you get fined for taking your kids out of school. Might as well be living in the Midevil period.

2) Japan? OK, I guess I'm showing my ignorance, but I thought they played their own game over there, totaly seperate from us. Explain please...

So explain to me what happens if the kid is sick and isn't feeling up to going to school? Do you get fined then? Do they really WANT you to send a sick kid to school and get others infected? That law is stupid =\

Well, don't we have truancy laws here in the US? Technically, a parent can be arrested if they take their kids out of school, right? Probably only in extreme cases -- like if your child doesn't return to school or misses an absurd amount of days..... But, still our laws dictate that a child should be in school.....

I'm also confused about the Japan thing... Can't figure out why PUI would schedule Worlds around the Japanese school year! Of course, this may not be entirely true. We haven't heard anything from official sources as to how they selected the date for Worlds -- or how future dates will be selected.

Does anyone know if Worlds is always at Disney World? Or does the location change every year?

Well, if you remember, the original date was in October. The Aug. date was probably the earliest they could do it and still be able to space out the other tournaments.

They should not give out fines if people miss school here in the USA. So many parents would be fined and possibly be going to jail. In my high school, some kids are lucky if they actully don't fail by daying out. (We can only miss like 16 days each year.)

I think the fine is meant to discourage parents from taking family vacations.

She could call them in sick, but would it work?

There are truency laws, yes, but it is not blanket "illegal" to pull your kids out of school. A, you can take them out whenever you want, so long as it doesn't become a repeated, constant thing, a B) you can basically do anything you want if you can show that they are getting an education equivlent to what they'd get in public school. Some states have different requirments, but generaly I would say these laws are stupid anyway. It's not the kids who are OUT of school who do poorly, it's the ones who are IN school - the public school system is HORRIBLE.

Tech College starts for me the 15th. I don't find skipping school to go play a game is wrong, especially when it is the early weeks of school where nothing happens and everyone just learns the easy stuff.

Not only does my daughter get to miss3 days of school (we are staying an extra day), but I get to miss 3 days of teaching... I will have a sub handle them for a few days. What is silly as teachers we accumulate days and days of annual leave time that we can never actually use until we retire. I will be using these in August.

There are few schools that I know of that would give a kid a hard time about going to this event. In the schools eye here in Memphis, it is a wonderful opportunity that shouldnt be missed.

I'm not sure how the schools here would handle this.....

I wonder if it would count as an "excused absence"...

Maybe Prof. Dave can write us a note?!? ;)

Surely, the schools would give it as much weight as a doctor's note! :)

The Japanese don't have summer vacation, they get 2 weeks or so in between sessions( 4 sessions, i think). So they have a small window for them to go to worlds. As for why it's important for worlds to accomadate the Japanese, well you should know the answer to that. It would still be hard to work around everyones school year, with everyone starting at different times. The whole USA should just start the day after labor day! Europe too!
FYI, there are some states who are considering the Japanese shcool year, and a few who are already doing it. Some nonsense about the kids forgetting things during the summer....
Of course, none of this affects us, as Dylan doesnt go back untill the 25th.... :D
