FYI, there are some states who are considering the Japanese shcool year, and a few who are already doing it. Some nonsense about the kids forgetting things during the summer....

Rocketman

Yeah, they tried that here a couple of years ago. They had two schools on a "year-round" schedule. You got 5 two-week mini-vacations throughout the year. It didn't really work out because 2 weeks was not enough for overseas vacations! Go figure!

We really have a law who regulates the presence of a kid at school.
Keeping your kids away from school because of a party a tourny or to extend your Holiday is forbidden.
14 days after summerholiday absolute forbidden, during the rest of the year the Head of the school can give permission in rare circumstances.
That is free translated a day of and our government decided that was happening to much so they made a law who forbids it.
If a kid is sick it's at home and they can check that by visiting your house.

The fine is for the parent untill a kid gets 12, thereafter also the kid get "punishduty" (don't know the word). They have to forfill a task outside schoolhours to serve community.
It's not that bad as it sound, because this system is taking care that everyone can have a proper education.
Our country is a bit overregulated and that's hard to understand for people not used at so many laws.

IF Worlds were held in October there was no problem, than I could have permission to keep them from school, because our Head thinks playing a Worlds is a rare circumstance and a great experience. But for the period after summerholiday he is bounded by the law and can't give permission.

OF course I can call from Orlando and say they are sick, but I'm not willing to lie.
There is one thing in life I don't accept and that's lying. Not from my children and not from someone else and that includes myself.
And like every good behaviour you have to start with yourself, so I don't lie over were my kids are aug 23 en 24.
It's one of the choices I made in life and it's not an easy one, but truth survives lies sooner of later.

Are the Japanese players allowed to use cards that aren't out in the US. It'll be like playing in a different format here for them.
Great question...but off topic.
Maybe start a topic on it.

.

i'm not missing school, but i see no problem missing a week of school, the 1st week, is all no work, just introducing yourself to teachers and schoolmates in your classes, and getting use to it...

What is great about America is that we as a people have that choice, and in fact we can choose what we feel is a "proper" education.

My son's schools starts August 12th so he'll miss Friday & Monday. No big deal to me though.

Team Cook - To answer 1 of your questions about where - That's hard to say right now where next years event will be held.
Of course the 1st Worlds event 2 years ago was in Seattle & this year in Orlando. But WotC did the first & PUSA the 2nd, so there's no telling where it might be & we probably won't have a confirmed time till May or so of next year anyway.

Hey Old Man, Thanks.... I appreciate it.

I hope they move it around... Disney World is nice, but I don't want to go there every year!

I hope they think about the date, too.... Kids can't miss a week of school EVERY year.

We are driving there.. we considered the flight option, but wanted to go to the beach.. On our way there, we are stopping at Panama City, then heading to Orlando. Then we are goingto WDW Monday.. one day.. so we can get back to Panama City Beach on Tuesday.. kids would rather play at the Beach than go to Disney!!

A friend of ours told us a trick to getting some Passes.. Email me at [email protected] and I will explain in an email to you a little better!

Okay, thanks. I just sent you the email.

The beach sounds good, but we go to Galveston often.
(I know, I know... yuck! -- but, hey, it's a beach)

I know at least 1/4 of our students at my school each year would miss about a week or more of class for various things, whether sick, or on vacation, or other reasons.

No, that's fine... My son misses more than a week cummulative... you know a day here, a day there....

That's different. I meant like ONE WEEK at the start of the school year EVERY year, which is what I'm thinking may happen to some kids if Worlds is always held the first week or two of the school year.

.

maybe this was the only date open for them to schedule worlds tho during the summer after all the nationals and Stadium challenge's and with time to schedule trips, this was the earliest they could do, anyway, i'm sure it'll be different next year...

If I was going, I'd end up missing probably 2/3 days depending on how long I wanted to stay.

Whats the big point in missing school?

The school makes less money from the feds cuz you weren there, like they need more money to waste on say sheets of paper which get wasted anyway in class especially after your year is over. (I've tossed atleast 3/4 of each of my class' binders)

Then you don't learn anything you really need in school anyway, especially the younger grades. I can't remember anything more from even my last 3 high school years except for the computer networking classes I've taken and one or two big things we learned in each class, cuz honestly, you just don't need all of it and its a waste of time.

It's amazing how much we emphasize education...you waste a fourth/fifth of your life in school in which about only your college years matter. And my mom's old boyfriend didn't even go to college...and he got lots of C's and D's in his classes...guess what he's a CEO of his own company and is worth millions...go figure. =/

Just make sure your kids grow from the experience and enjoy worlds, trust me, they're missing NOTHING the first week (or even if it was the 22nd week) anyway. And just to let you know, I'm 18th in my class of 450ish...so its not like I'm a total loser who just hates school for no reason. =/

Okay im missing the first day of my school, as well as my smaller brother. Does anyone at PUI have childrean and know when the schedule these kind of things? I really doubt it.

1) I can't believe there is a nation in this world where you get fined for taking your kids out of school. Might as well be living in the Midevil period.

2) Japan? OK, I guess I'm showing my ignorance, but I thought they played their own game over there, totaly seperate from us. Explain please...

I shall attempt to explain...

You see, Japan cares nothing for the U.S. players, so long as we keep buy cards and spending money. So when a big thing like worlds happens, it doesn't matter what the reality is, or what's right, wrong or logical. It matters what is best for JAPAN. And PUSA and POP are too busy kissing TPC's butt to explain that it would have been better to have the worlds in July, so another 200 or so players from america, the country it's being held in, can make it. But then again, that would be logical and fair...

And since when has TPC been concerned with ANYTHING like that?
