There will be a subscription based service, confirmed by the woman running the demo at WA States.

So we have to buy the theme decks to get the passwords for this game and pay a subscription? :nonono: That sounds a little too mean to me.

according to the press releases and website, the player vs. AI 'trainer challenge' and player vs. player 'TCG online' are completely different animals when it comes to card/deck access costs.
The Pokémon Trainer Challenge is a totally free online game that you can play via a Flash-enabled Web browser. Whether you’re new to the Pokémon Trading Card Game or a regular member of your local Pokémon League, you won’t want to miss the fun of the Pokémon Trainer Challenge! In the Pokémon Trainer Challenge, you’ll face off against a host of computer opponents in intense battles. There are 14 opponents for you to defeat, each with different personalities and strategies to challenge even the best players.Choose from several pre-constructed decks to play with as you have fun and hone your Pokémon TCG skills!
THIS is the version that is now in open beta.
Expanding on the recently introduced Pokémon Trainer Challenge, The Pokémon Company International announced today the Pokémon Trading Card Game Online, a player-versus-player TCG, launching in fall 2011 for anyone looking to battle 24 hours a day, seven days a week, from the convenience of their PC.

[snip...]When Pokémon TCG Online launches later this year at www.pokemontcg.com, players will already have two ways to collect virtual Pokémon TCG cards, ensuring they are ready for battle online. The recently announced Pokémon Trainer Challenge, launching in April, will give players access to three free virtual Pokémon TCG pre-constructed decks that will be transferable into Pokémon TCG Online. New and seasoned Pokémon TCG players can also prepare for online battles against other players by purchasing physical cards—the three Pokémon TCG: Black & White theme decks, which are available April 6th, include a code that unlocks a virtual deck for play in the Pokémon Trainer Challenge and Pokémon TCG Online.
THIS is the version the representative was likely referencing when speaking about subscription or other costs...

The links in my above post state clearly that cards have QR Codes which you'll "scan" through your webcam to get the card digitally, no micro-transactions so yeah thats great news for TCG players, not so much for people who want to play the video game and not the actual physical game. Finished the triple crown, pretty fun, wish the AI was better since I played through it in hard mode without much trouble even when I was weak against their decks, but overall I had a great time playing and would love this game to be as fleshed out as it can be, still hoping for a Wiiware/3DS release if its popular.

True. Very true. The decks they give us need more search cards, cause I cant do much with a Cyndaquil and nothing to search for its evo's with.

plus the fact is their deck building they do is horrible they take out supports for more supporters when you have over 20 energy and 30 pokemon .

Come on guys, this is for beginners, the PvP is going to be what we really want, this Trainer Challenge is for people to learn cards and take it easy, so they won't give you a Luxchomp deck to start off with...

at least you can get on

I cannot even get past the opening load up. It says "maximum number of players for the server has been reached" or junk like that...

I've played over 50 games on the new site and I think it's great! It will be fun to add new cards to it too! It will be even better when it's fully up and running. but I've been having fun playing it just for kicks.

what browser do you use? I have tried chrome and firefox and still have not been able to get on...

if you're using firefox and have ad-block and/or no script installed, i've found i have to disable both on the pokemon.com site and any linked sites. hope this helps...

I saw the article on PokéBeach stating that they wanted to get as many people on as possible from 7-10 PM EST, and when I tried to go on the simulator during that time, I got a message saying that it was down for maintenance. Just now, I successfully got on, but noticed that it wanted my screen name and hometown again, and asked me to pick a deck, so I think it must have been reset or something. Has anyone else experienced this and/or knows what's going on?

EDIT: I picked the same exact screen name, hometown, and deck I had been using, and it says I've defeated 0 opponents with the deck (I was one game away from the league playoffs), and is starting me off dueling Zach with all of the first-time pop-ups appearing during the game. Yep, looks like it was reset...

that's the nature of an open beta test, after all...you're TESTING the game, not playing for keeps...
