Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Skipping Nationals vs. Ranking

You should really consider playing at Nats. IMO there is no better way to play against different decks to really prepare yourself for Worlds.

As someone who lost a rating invite due to a poor Nats showing last year, I have no regrets playing Nats. As it's been stated before, it's just an invite, not a paid trip. Clearly you've had a good season, and thus should perform well at Nats. The worst way to lose an invite is to sit out and have people pass you.

Honestly my good man.... With a rating that high... How could you NOT walk in the door and expect to do well enough to keep your spot? Last time I checked, even Joe Average like myself, can grind into worlds if I wanted to try.... If you're that good then you could probably get in there that way. But the FUN, the COMPETITION, the chance to see what STL has in store for you????

Gotta look in the mirror on that one bro.....

I think you SEVERLY underestimate how hard the grinder is.

Well, we are going to Nats and Matthew is at 1855 now, number 16 in juniors, he loves Nats...it is a great time and you get to play some great matches and see your buddies from all over the country! Last year, we had an opportunity to get an invite at Nats and he went 4-4 losing 75 plus points, was he sad - yes - did we go the grinder - yes - he finished 4th out of 100 plus players, got in the tournament and was one game away from the top 32 cut! Our deal this year is going to be -- play until you lose and then stop, depending on how far into things he is...have fun either way!

The Sweet's in Texas!

Mate , It's your choice but the Worlds is the Worlds. And being in San Diego is a lovely touch. Beautiful weather and beautiful beaches!

And for those of you who say play until you lose, what if he loses in the first round and drops 40 points? OOPS

I'm going to both but I want to play the VGC so I'll skipping the card game. Bloody shame we can't do both.

Cheers

You can't drop 40 points at Nats this year. 32 is the max, and it's virtually impossible to drop 32 points.

Sorry I stand corrected. I was thinking of last year when I personally lost 40 points to a bad draw when it was 44K. So let's say you lose once and lose almost 32 points. OOPS!

I would hate to lose an invite to World's by not playing. Be in control of your own destiny. Everyone who says sit on your ranking are not the one's risking a spot. Think about how many people will pass you in the rankings after they win only 1 game at Nats.

I estimate at least 20 people who will jump your rankings after the 1st 2 rounds should they go 2-0. Where will you be if they decide to sit tight and drop.

As of today, without all the Battleroads being reported, #61 is at 1800. Lots of players sitting right behind you hoping you say home and slip out of the running.

Good Luck

Also, US Nats is the one event that the US "Great One" has never captured. (By Great One here I mean Ness, not Curran H., who is also a "Great One" in the Pokemon World)

Vince

Curran has won at least one of EVERY tournament type...

BR, City, State, Regional, Nats, Worlds. He is the only person to ever do this (I think).

Actually... I think Tristan did this as well, as he won '07 Nats (2008 Junior Champ).

Just a fun fact.

Nice thoughts mate but not true. Look at last years rankings from before Nationals and after and you'll see not a lot of that happened.
BTW, does everybody have to drop!!! Boggles my Brit mind! Just as bad to drop to protect your ratings than to not play at all.

I am not saying all these people will pass him up...I am just saying that there are a lot of people who have the potential to move up. Sitting at 18 leaves you very vulnerable

Just went undefeated 6-0 at a battle road yesterday. Hopefully that'll bring me up at least 3-5 pts. I guess I'll just eagerly wait and see what happens at nats

No... I didn't meant it that way at all.... All I meant was he would have at least had a shot if he missed it due to his rankings.... And if this guys ranking is that high, then he's got the talent to give it a run. The "Joe Average" comment was simply, anybody could at least PLAY for a shot at Worlds if they wanted.

I still don't think you understand how hard the grinder really is. I have played in 2 grinders. I played in 05, I was 3-0 before losing and being eliminated from getting in. They changed the rule to have a full tournament the next few years (good choice). I ended up going 7-1 and making it in, losing against someone from my area that I always beat in R2, winning a game in SD, and beating someone who was new to the game in the last round (They should of won but didn't know everything yet about the game).

The problem with the grinder is, if you give a deck that is REALLY good to a player that is REALLY bad, they have a REALLY good shot on making it because they know HOW to play. It really is a crap shoot, and you just have to pray that not only do you get really lucky, but that you have the ability to out play other players who might be better or just as good as you.

I take a try, im a player from germany so dont say anything about my english speelings :p.

Seems like the years before my fight for the invites (2004 comeptitor, 2005 invite, 2006 invite 2007 invite
2008 competitor and i hope 2009 competitor)

This year and last year im in the same situation, last year i booked my flight for orlando before nats. and i was pretty close in the ranking (the best 20 eran an invitaton for worlds in europe) i made a decision. Waiting and sitting home? Or going to play the nats, the decision was going to play the nats after round 3 i dropped with 3-0 it was still enough, but it was so close!! (place 29.)

This year i wasnt in before nats place 50 only 15 points away and i made the same decision and played the nats but in round 3 i lost the game of bad luck! And i said to me come on this year you must play for you invite i go 6-1 in the cut 32, and lost the first round in the t32 6-2 my record its engouh but close!

So i will say go play the nats it can be enough but so many players are behind you (so close behind you dont forgett it).

Paying for a family of 5 to go to Nationals putting all your hopes on one Junior and then drop after one game lost? That's some crazy money management, lol.

I know Matthew and I know he's not going to have a good time unless he's playing in every game at Nationals, whether he's winning or losing. Turn that kid loose and watch him go. Knowing he's gonna get pulled after he loses will only hurt him.

After all, you know, he knows, we all know he'll get a shot at the grinder, if needed and if that's the case, he's got the strength and knowledge to get to the big show.

Mike Cook old buddy, I am doubting money is an issue for a family that will go to Nats, and then drop for ratings, only to pay for a family of 5 to turn and go to San Diego to play in another fun Pokemon Worlds event!

They are at the "Illness" stage where you will go anywhere, and play anyone in Pokemon, just for the love of the game. All vacations are Poke-related.

Heck, this group goes to Kentucky, Texas, Missouri (this will be twice!) and now San Diego just for this great game!

Man, I can't wait to be back at that stage! (Next year, come on Alex!!!)

Heck, they came up to Missouri so often, I have a 5 winner pin for Matthew!!! (Yes, I just found a new bag of these!)

I'm 1850 but since I won a trip to Nationals and I am a former National Champion I don't think I would consider a sit out, or even a 3-0 drop for that matter. It's the toughest event of the year yes, but the feeling of winning it is unbeatable! I can almost guaranteed you 1853 might oust you from the invite so I'd strongly reccomend you reconsider as a lot of the people right below you are attending US Nationals and have an easy opportunity to pass you with just a few wins.

This is a ridiculous post, why would you not play? The only reason to avoid nationals is if you are honest with yourself and think you will do poorly. (OR you don't have the money for both, which you said is not the case)
