Pokémon TCG: Sword and Shield—Brilliant Stars

Top Cut Invitational: Tournament of Champions

I am not trying to burn any bridges, but how does Justin Sanchez get priority over Gino or Martin Moreno? Justin's only real accomplishment is his 1st place at this year's nationals.(along with a top 4 at regionals in florida this year)

Gino right off the bat is one of the only people that have come close to winning US Nats and Worlds in Masters.

Martin Moreno is the only undefeated National Champion and has a record of 27-2 through all the nationals he has gone to.

I understand that you can only pick so many people, and some people can't even get to worlds this year, but I think you should reconsider the roster of people you are inviting.

Well his point more-so i think is that as the current national champ, im the obvious choice. My accomplishments are no were near as great as gino's or martin's, but it would only be fitting for the current national champion to be playing in the tournament of champions.

I think that there should be at least 1 canadian master in there, people like curtis, gordon or sebastian would all be great players, the list looks good so far and love this idea.

Why don't you do a separate event for those who think they are qualified? There must be some obvious requirements like Regionals Finalist, Nats top 4, etc. But it would smooth over quite a few issues for those that weren't invited for this event. Cap it off at like 32 players (some should be invited) and everyone would be happy. I'm not being biased or anything, but I think Jacob L should fight among the best. He is such a great player and I am sure he could stand up to some of the Worlds best :D Anyways, I am excited to watch this as a spectator.

Oh, just another quick thought. What about calling picks for a favorite? It shouldn't be a buy in or anything, but for those who vote who they think will do well in order (1-8) and tally up the scores, it would be cool (and make the event more competitive). Idk if this is legal though.

I'm pretty sure the other three in that group would be Jimmy O, Chris Fulop and Jay Hornung

Sorry, but I do think you're being biased. I don't see Jacob, or any senior competing with the best players. No offense to him.

If we're talking Seniors (which we aren't), I wouldn't be putting anyone ahead of Takuto.

I'd have to agree w/ you there- since we're on that topic(although IDK why, no offense to SRs or anything, I just don't see how they could compete w/ Fulop, Ness, etc.)
Top 4 Srs-
Takuto
Ty W
Hiroki Y
AMT

No offense to Anne but I think Jacob is better. The rest of the list is spot on though I must say

I don't consider myself as one of the top four seniors. Like GBA said, Jacob is the better player. His accomplishments so far in this game are incredible.

Have to say that Takuto has 1st at worlds and 2nd at worlds+has tournament succes in Japan(Perhaps, hard to get that information).

No sir, Jacob is not as good player as Takuto, but he's a good player nonetheless.

lolol
how did this thread go from debating spots
to who is the best senior in the world?

read over the thread and i like some ideas

every player playing the same deck would be actually really skillfull and take away alot of the excuses
make the games actually come down to outplaying

while some canadians do have a bunch of accomplishments curtis (3rd at nats 5th at worlds won half of the countries provincials), gordon (top 4 at nats for like 5 years in a row lolol) and sebastiann(2nd nats 7th worlds) these guys arent champions which is why they shouldnt be considered
only canadian who is a champion is jacob and seniors shouldnt be taken into consideration cause they havent tested themselves in masters yet

smacktack15 made a cool point , dedicate the last spot of the tournament to another mini tournament for players like jacob and any other players you guys feel is deserving and have another 16 man tournament for the spot.

whoever gets to play im just excited to watch

On the topic of a "qualifier" event: Initially we wanted to have a "grinder" tournament to decide the last spot, but there just isn't any time for it. The only day we could run it is on Thursday, and most people will want to test for the Grinder/Worlds instead of playing in the tournament. Rest assured we do plan on holding more events in the future; this one was just thrown together in the past month or so, so we are trying to keep it as simple as possible.

In my opinion, this is quite debatable. Same decks for everyone in the Pokemon TCG does not equal chess, since the single largest contributor to the outcome of games could very well be starting hands (chess, on the other hand, has everyone starting off from the same point). Of course, it kinda depends on the deck too. MD-on Gyarados vs Gyarados could be a terribly lopsided matchup while Gardevoir/Gallade mirrors were much more interesting and dynamic.

Aside from all of that, however, is the fact that having everyone play the same deck suppresses creativity and proper metagaming. People who want to play against the format wouldn't get the chance to, while other metagaming measures would be minimized. Part of being a highly skilled player is adapting to a metagame and showing up every now and then with a surprise for the format. Forcing everyone to play with the same deck is demeaning to the players who take pride in "breaking the format" (Ballard, Silvestros, European players, me?, etc.).

My suggestion? This is the player's tournament, so adopt some of the rules changes that we all yearn for so much. I'm going to be honest and say that we as the players seem to have a much better grasp of the game than the creators do. The majority of great players understand how bad the Black & White first turn rule change is, as well as the idea of donking. Adopt the Ballard "rule" of allowing a player a turn to throw down a Basic before they lose if they have no Pokemon in play, go for the optional mulligan with 1 less card draw for each mulligan (and an extra card for the opponent), and shake up the first turn however you see fit.

The players know what changes need to be made to this game, and perhaps this tournament could open the way for those discussions (even in Japan). :thumb:

Turn one wins are caused by printing cards that shouldn't be printed. Why even print cards like Tyrogue? Why print PlusPower? (Uxie, Sableye, Crobat G shouldn't have been printed either.) Anything that can potentially earn a turn one win should not be printed. Period. It is the absolute worst thing for the game. If anything discourages both new & old players, it is losing on the first turn!

At the same time, people should know when playing cards like Cleffa that they are incurring a risk. Donking ought to be less of an issue for players who try to keep 30 hp basics to a minimum.

i think ppl are understating the fact that worlds is still the tournament that will determine 'the best player in the world' lol. this side tournament is just a bonus by kyle, pram, and co. in order to raise the public exposure of pokemon by creating a friendly tournament. other card games have websites dedicated to coverage of their events, pokemon doesnt have anything close to that.

will THE BEST 8 players play in this tournament? most likely not. kyle himself isnt playing. many of the top japanese players may not play and undoubtedly the nature of the invitation process will have snubs. just enjoy the matches that will take place. these players could easily just enjoy themselves after worlds is done. instead, theyre taking time out of their vacation in order to provide something for the pokemon community so we should be thankful for their dedication.

I agree the TO's should be able to run this any way they want/ invite who they want to and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Just a suggestion though about what the first turn rules could be if the TO's really are considering changing them:

-The player going 1st does not draw a card.

-Neither player can place damage counters or damage on an opponent's Pokemon in any way (including by attacking) on their first turn.

-The player going first cannot play Trainers, Supporters or Stadiums.

-You have an optional mulligan before the game starts - it works exactly like a regular mulligan and can be used only if you have a basic in your hand (you still mulligan without a basic).

-Rare Candy goes back to the way it's printed except can't be played on either player's first turn.
