I'll be judgin too.

Keeping an eye on those shifty 10 and unders...
Well as long as you aren't "helping" them and walking through their game then all will go smoothly. I'm referring to what Ron said happened at my CC regarding you helping a 10- player by telling him what to play.... Just be careful, there's a BIG difference between judging and helping...

- Chris (if he can get time off)
Steve, I put in a time off request for this event, on 4/8, last weekend but haven't heard any feedback from my management yet. I'll keep you updated when I get the green light for sure, but I don't forsee any problems with getting the time off that I need to attend.

So that's what last Saturday was about..

Again things get lost in translation. I thought players HAD to draw a card each turn, and in said match at the Lakewood CC's I told the erring player he needed to draw a card. The judge on duty (Tonja Cunningham) informed me that I was not allowed to talk to the player about such things during gameplay, and I stopped thereafter.

Had she asked me to leave because she thought I was 'telling him what to play', I would have left promptly. In no way did I 'walk him through the game' if I had don't you think that Tonja would have said something?

I admit that on more then one occasion the player wanted to show me a particulalry good topdeck. In retrospect I guess it would be wisest to avoid such situations by leaving the game table altogether until the 10-'s at league learn the nuances of competitive play.

Again, I'm as much responsible for showing the younger players the correct tournament procedures as anyone. But it's difficult when a good majority of the other competitive 10-'s have competitive Pokeparents who show them all the rules - and I have only two hours a week to pracitce with 30+ players, many of whom are still learning basic strategy

I apologize for the long reply, but I take any misconceptions about my fairness as a player or judge seriously.

Don't take my post the wrong way. I was just simply bringing up that situation to remind both spectators/players, as well as judges, that they aren't allowed to provide "help" to any player of any age group at any time during the event. Now I'm glad that you spend whatever time you have with your kids to help them learn the basics at your league (even though 2 hours isn't really enough time, IMO), for that is one of the things expected from you as a league leader and a professor. I never said that you were never fair when it comes down to playing and judging. Have you ever judged a tournament before? I only ask because I've never seen you judge an event, and I haven't heard from anyone else that you've judged any kind of event so I'm just curious.

Now, even though you told your player to draw a card, that's the judge's job, not yours. As a spectator, you are now aware (thanks to Tonja) that if you see a misplay, you should tell a judge and let the judge deal with it and not interfere with the match. According to the POP penalty guidelines, there are severe penalties involved for spectators who interfere with a game, and Tonja could have given you a Warning. I am just letting you know about this as an FYI because the POP penalty guidelines want us to give out warnings for this type of infraction for casual, competitive, and 10 and under penalties. Yes, they consider interfering/disturbing the match simple things like talking to the players and also reminding them of something they forgot to do (ie, poison damage, drawing card, flip for sleep, etc.....).

Again, try not to misunderstand me. I never said you were not fair as a player or judge, but only reminding you not to "remind" your players about stuff during a tournament event (since you've done it at more than one event in the past), whether you are playing and talking to the players next to you, or just simply spectating. How you choose to remind your players and teach them the basics outside of tournament events is completely up to you, but let the judges handle the misplays...

I'd like to make a tournament out here sometime... but unfortunately, Team Cook has the NASA regional on the same day... maybe sometime next tournament year I'll make a trip, since I'm kinda out west now. Your area is one I have not traveled to for Pokemon... yet. Maybe after Worlds...

Yeah, that NASA event sounds really awesome. I wish that it was on a different day too, but they only had a couple time slots to fill for regionals to keep them close together...

Craig, are you planning on running both a SSMB and Colliseum tourney? Quite a few of my players were interested in playing at states but weren't prepared/didn't have time.

And for any concerned players/fellow judges - No, I am not 15. =P

So just out of curiosity, why do you need an "assistant" judge? Doesn't the assistant do the same thing as the lead judge by helping out with judging the area you are assigned to? I've never worked with Dwayne before when it comes down to officially judging an event of his, so I'm a bit unclear about what the exact responsibilities of an assistant judge entail compared to a lead judge.

I'm only used to the "head judge" and then the other judges "below" the head judge, so is this kinda the same thing, only being multiple head judges? Any clarification would be greatly appreciated, and I'm sure the most of my responsibilities will be covered in the meeting.

Chris, I suppose it would've been better to say, " Head Judge for _____ (specific age group)." That's what the lead judges are. All "judges" will get professor points and compensation. Non "judges" (ie., helpers) won't get points, just compensation (ie., boosters). I'm not sure about Craig running side events. If he ends up running any OP side events, obviously he WILL get points, besides any compensation Dwayne gives him.

I'm a retired military guy. I like an unambiquous chain of command. The POP rep will be the top general, then Dwayne. Craig and I report to Dwayne. The lead judges report to me. Assistants and helpers report to their respect leaders. A bit militaristic I know, but it gives the players a structure for appeal, if needed -- just go up the chain-of-command.

FYI, the POP rep at last year's MtnW Regionals at Utah did NOT want to get involved in rulings. He may do the same this year, but that's up to him.

Back to back posts merged. The following information has been added:

Correction:

Non "judges" might get professor points. I'll have to check with POP.

Okay everyone at this time I am looking to get opinions on side events for MW Regionals! I am going full time duty on Regionals so everyone will be able to get the most out of the video game station. However if we pack the house which we probably will, any video game side events will not start until after the main swiss rounds. Also if you make it in the finals you may not be able to play in the side events. Sorry but we are expecting more people so in order to accomendate for the best amount of people.

Here is what I have plan so far!
SMASH THE ROCKIES POKEMON MEGA MIX - A Super Smash Bros. Melee Tournament Open to 32 players, no more entries after capacity has been filled. Registration will take place after the end of the swiss rounds of the main event. Players may select any character. Stages will either be PokeFloats, Pokemon Stadium, Battlefield, or Final Destination selected at random. Only item used is PokeBall which its appearance rate is also selected at random. Matches are 5-stock with a 8-minute back up time limit. Free to play.

CELEBRATION OF THE ROCKIES - A Pokemon GBA/XD tournament
This is very players best chance to practice for the Journey Across America quailfers which both Utah's and Colorado's will come after Regionals! Here is the dig. 32 players are allowed in and its going to be played exactly to the rules of the Journey Across America. Except no online exam to puzzle yourself with. Best of luck to all players. Free to play.

I will also be running 8 player booster draft and constructed tournaments. Basically each will cost $20 dollars for draft and $3 for constructed. Each are single elimination and played to POP rules. Entry fee to support prizes.

I will have EON TICKETS and JIRACHI downloads avalable after the video game side events. Pokemon Movies and Music throughout the day. And more stuff of course!

I look forward to seeing all of you there.

Craig, maybe since you are giving away a lot of goodies, I would recommend a raffle drawing. This is most exciting for the kids, because it makes them get all anxious when waiting for their numbers to be called. Ron and I do raffles at our events, and I think they are really successful in getting people excited and motivated, especially if the goodies are decent! I also have an excess amount of Sevii Islands league badges that aren't really being used, and wouldn't mind donating most of them to a "grab bag" or raffle. Most of the kids I talked to at States told me they don't have any badges period, so I think that wouldn't be a bad idea. More suggestions to come as I think of them!

By the way, I think your Kimono auction is HALARIOUS!!! Good luck to your ebay store!

Yes we are think about drawings for Regionals this time. In any case I am going to make sure no one at Regionals leaves without a badge whether or not they want it. Ha ha ha.

And YES I finally made the auction worth it! I am glad I got a laugh out of someone. Anyways if anyone wants to talk about that auction either start something in the RTC or PM me!

So Craig, would you like me to bring my extra Sevii Islands league badges?? Anything else you can think of to request me bringing?? I don't have everything, but I'll see what I can do.

Apparently there aren't too many people that post in this part of the forum, especially from CO...

I'm truely excited to help judge this event, for it will be a really fun day. I also think that having the side events are a big plus.
