At first I'd like to thank again Kristin, Ann and Antoine for coming on the boards.
I know it's not always easy for them, but their presence here is a very positive point for all of us.

I'd also like to thank all our US friends for their other topics about Europe. I'm really happy to see that we are a worldwide community and that players from everywhere are ready to help other players [Smile]
As you probably know, I'll be in Seattle with my daughter. Please, come to see me ! I only know a few of you, and I'd really like to know you in person [Wink]

I've read another topic, and as I think this one is the older one about the situation in Europe, I'll answer to two messages here :

quote:
I've put so much work into holding Europe's OP alive. All those hours in front of the computer. All the work for Team Europe. And this is the result. This is what we get. I'm frustrated, and I'm soon giving up. (Golduck)
Where have you been these last days Eskil ? In Germany ? Please don't go there anymore, you come back with very bad ideas [Evil Smirk]
WE NEED YOU in the community, and the third member of Team Europe will never let the founder of the Team quit the Team or the game [NoNoNo]

Just remember last year ... there was no STSQ in Belgium, and a lot of Belgian players were in NY and SD anyway.
An English, a Belgian and a Norvegian were watching one of your Belgian friends playing a Para/Gatr on a Saturday afternoon (sorry, just remember you're sick when we talk about that blue card [Big Grin] ) against one of our German members ... that's TE Eskil, and we want to live that kind of things together again. [Razz]

quote:
I have been working for Wizards for more then five years, I have seen people, products and organised play programs come and go, but make no mistake, we allways care(d) ...
It really is not very encouraging for any of us to read all these posts on the messageboards about how bad you all think we do our jobs.

Be as it may, we do try to find a good balance between what you want, and what we can do (or our budgets allow us to.. ). ...

To be honest, I really want to see things pick up in Europe and whats more, Im prepared to invest a lot of my time and effort in this but it can only happen with your support, not your negativsm.
(Ann)

Ann, I understand that the kind of messages you read here are not encouraging for you and for the team in Berchem.
I have the chance to know probably more than many other players the nice job you, and all the team, do for the game and the community ... because I have more contacts with the Office.

Like I've said before, all the things you do are not always visible by the majority of the players. If you don't talk about it like Karin, Antoine and yourself do for a few days, people may think you don't do anything for our game and leave the community alone.

The posts coming from WotC Europe are showing that it's not the truth (that's my opinion, ... don't know for the other players [Wink] ), but it's difficult for many of us to know things you've explained these last days

I may assure you that we want, you and the players who write on these topics, exactly the same thing. To bring the game to a higher level ... the members of Wizards and the members of the community all together.

A famous person said one day 'I have a dream' ... I'm far from beeing famous but I have one too ... to see people from the other European offices join us here on the Pokegym.

I know you can't do anything about that in Berchem, and I don't ask you to do something in that direction.

You showed that the two main Wizards offices (USA and Belgium) are willing to listen to the players, to talk to them and to build something with them.
Three offices are missing here today ... we need them too to make, all together, the game get bigger in every European country [Wink]

That's great to hear! [Smile] Now I can sleep a little better the night before the tournament, when I know that there will be the correct number of rounds.

We just didnt think we would get enough professors to justify 6 rounds and that 3 rounds would be adequate ... but we will stick to the math and elevate the number of rounds if nescessary.

You boys are reading too much into this..... [Roll Eyes]
She is still saying only 3 rounds of Swiss, BUT if there is a larger amount of attending professors than they expected when calculating the 3 rounds, they will elevate the amount of rounds in Swiss.

So what she means is that if there isn't enough professors it will still only be 3 rounds of swiss..... [Evil Smirk]

What I would like to know is how many professors attending is necessary to elevate the number to 6 rounds instead of 3?

Hey -

Sauron - We might not have gotten these papers you taked about. At least - I havent seen them anywhere. Could you fax them again (to my attention and Ill see to it they reach the right person).

Dumbledore - I know that you would like more then 3 rounds, Ill do my best to get you more than that. Normally the number of rounds go up with more then 32 players. Ill suggest to re-discuss this internally after the GymChallenge in Antwerp next week. Ill keep you all posted on the result... if you have good arguments, send them to me at [email protected] - they might come in handy.

For those who want more rounds in Amsterdam, I propose to organize a tournament at the hotel [ROFL]

But no booster draft !!! Nights are colder in Amsterdam than in San Diego if we have to stay outside because the hotel is on fire again ! [Bounce]

More seriously, only 2 Profs have given their name on my 'Amsterdam' topic in the Professor section ... If we are only 3, I don't think 3 rounds will be necessary [Angel]

FreddyK, you said news ???

101 players in total + 32 (or 33 ?) for the 15+ side event.

Results : 10- Nick Alfaro (Belgium) with an 'Eevee evolution lines' deck (beats a Magcargo/Entei in final). Nice for us because Nick and his mother are really good players. We've found two more players for our 'training sessions' before Seattle [Smile]

15+ Willem Coenen (Holland) with a ... Gatr that he played perfectly (that's what our national specialist said, Jean Marc). I've just seen the end of the final, as I was judging the 10- event. I don't know which deck was played by the other finalist.
Willem won the last round of Swiss against Jerome, who finished 10th. So Jerome will be in Amsterdam. [Wink]

Side event : won by an excellent player from Holland (sorry, I don't remember his name [Confused] ). I haven't followed the side event (same reason as for the top 8 of the 15+ cat), but I know Laetitia has only been beaten by the winner (5 won/1 lost) who won his 6 rounds with an Erika Victreebel/Murkrow deck.

My opinion about the tournament ? GREAT !!!

The place was as nice as in Paris or Barcelona last year, perfect organization, very friendly athmosphere, really funny for the judges and, according to what I've heard, for the players too.
Only one think was bad ... the bar/restaurant was closed around 2 pm ... the tournament was finished aroud 7 pm, and nothing to drink in the area [Evil Smirk]

All the people I have talked to about the event were really happy and enthusiast.

We had judges from Belgium (Bart + 3 Profs (Jean Marc, Kristel and myself)), from Holland and even from Denmark !

One person was missing ... MTM. But FreddyK and Ukpokemonpro, it's your fault !!! Why didn't you put him with some Brooks and a Sneasel in a box and sent the box to Antwerp ??? [ROFL]

A proposition : WotC Europe could organize events like that every month in Belgium [Razz]
Who said that I always want more, and sometimes too much ??? [Devilish]

Would be interesting to see the decklist for the 15+. Could you as soon as you get it post it on here?

Thanks for the report. These Dutch players are a little too good for my liking...

BTW did you mean 11-14 rather than 15+ in your report of Will vs Jerome?

Right, it was 11-14 for Jerome

I'll post the decklist as soon as I have it.
According to Jean Marc, it was a classic Gatr with some babies (Cleffa and Magby), 3 or 4 Double gust, Trash, ...

We all know that there are very good players in Holland ...

Talking about the Belgians, there will maybe be only 1 Belgian player in Seattle in 11-14 ... qualified in England [Wink]
That's Europe and Team Europe [ROFL]

Hi

This first Challenge certainly put everything in perspective. I must say it was a very interesting and rewarding experience.

We will post the top 8 decklists at www.playingpokemon.com later this week (Ill post a message when they are up).

Some facts :

Exactly 100 players : 28 in the 10 and under category, 72 in the 11-14 category.
Side Event, 15+ with 28 players.

Particpants came from Belgium (ofcourse) The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark.

I admit the catering should have stayed open longer (they closed at 5 PM by the way, the tournament continued untill 7ish ... ) but I couldnt persuade them ...

All in all I think the even ran smoothly, we will make some small adjustments for the Stadium in Amsterdam.

My thanks to all the professors who helped out and made this a great event.

See you all next time

Thanks Ann for the official amount of players.

Posting the top 8 decklist will be very interesting. I think some of the decks played were not the archetypes we all know.

I remember posts before San Diego about the best decks in Modified. Most of the people were talking about Gatr, Blaine Arcanine and Crobat, with eventually a few other possible decks.
I think that more and more different decks can now reach the top 8.
BTW, I haven't seen all the decks played in the finals in Rainham and Antwerp (I've seen 5 decks out of 8), but 2 of them were Entei/Magcargo.

Does anybody know which decks were in the top 8 in Torquay ?

I just surfed to Wizards.com and found information about the Professor Championship. They say it's "the first ever multi-format tournament", and it seems much like the Professor Championship in Amsterdam. Are these the same rules as for the Professor Championship in Amsterdam? If so, I'm very excited. New Modified Format & Draft, and first THEN the Top 8 follows!

Here is the information, from wizards.com:

What do I need to bring with me to the Professor Championship?
You will need to bring $20 for the entry fee, a 60-card deck that is legal in the new Modified Constructed format (see below), and a decklist.

• How to fill out a decklist
• Deckbuilding tips and strategy
• Pokemon Master Rules Updates

What type of tournament is this?
This will be the first multi-format tournament Wizards has ever held for Pokemon.

Pokemon Professors, just like Professor Oak in the Pokemon cartoon, are considered experts in all the different aspects of Pokemon. The only fair way to determine the 2002 Champion Professor would be to test him or her in various gameplay formats.

First, everyone will play 3 Swiss rounds of Modified Constructed . Not just ANY Modified constructed either, but the upcoming NEW Modified format rules:

Then all participants will play in a number of Swiss Booster Draft rounds (number of rounds dependent on the number of participants in the tournament). Each player will be given 2 Packs of Gym Heroes and 3 packs of Gym Challenge to Booster Draft with.

Finally, the scores will be combined of these 2 formats to come up with the top 8 players who will then compete in a Gym Heroes/Gym Challenge Rochester Draft to determine the overall Champion

What are the new Modified format rules?
Modified will change after this year's Pokemon World Championships held in August. Since Pokemon Professors should be leading the way with new deck technology we wanted to give you an early chance to play in this format. The new Modified Constructed format rules will be:

Modified Deck Construction (legal after August 2002)
Modified decks may include cards from the following Pokémon card sets:

• Neo GenesisTM expansion ()
• Neo DiscoveryTM expansion ()
• Southern Islands CollectionTM expansion ()
• Neo RevelationTM expansion
• Neo DestinyTM expansion
• Any new expansion released after Neo Destiny, starting on the day of the official product release
• Cards with the promo expansion symbol ()

With the exception of basic energy cards (Grass, Fire, Water, Lightning, Psychic, and Fighting energy), cards from the following sets are not allowed in Modified tournaments unless they are duplicates of existing legal cards:

• Base Set (no expansion symbol)
• JungleTM expansion ()
• FossilTM expansion ()
• Base Set 2 expansion ()
• Team RocketTM expansion ()
• Gym HeroesTM expansion ()
• Gym ChallengeTM expansion ()

The following cards are banned in Modified tournaments:

• The promo card known as Ancient Mew
• _______'s Pikachu (The promo card known as "Happy Birthday Pikachu")
• Sneasel (Neo Genesis version)

Cards stamped with Prerelease and Wizards of the Coast(r) logos do not count as promo cards but rather as cards from their original sets. Check the expansion symbols (if any) to determine whether the card is legal in Modified.

28 people in 15+ side event in Antwerpen....

Michel you where there, where all those 28 people professors? Because if a side event is 28 people and they didn't have to take the test to participate...I don't think we can estimate the number of Professors in Amsterdam by that.
